The Role
The scheme was relatively enjoyable mainly due to the vibrant and lively environment at the London office and the friends and colleagues you get to know during your time there. The work was at times interesting and learning from senior people was good.
When given work I felt it was often work that needed to be done and not something trivial that was given to interns. Often times I saw my work included in client documents or something that helped in producing deliverables which was very satisfying.
Whenever working on a project I would be given a good breakdown of what was required and what the objectives of the work were. It was useful to understand the context of the project and also be given help on the technical side. Colleagues would sometimes sit for half an hour after a meeting answering my questions which was one of the most valuable aspects of working here.
This was often an issue as in my particular department (Tax Management Consulting) there was no set work prepared for interns before starting or projects we were assigned to. From day one I had to approach people and ask if they required help, which was at first, slightly daunting but as you build a rapport with people and network it gets easier to stay busy. Days were very varied - some days I would be working on different tasks all day others I would have one small task for the entire day. I rarely had to stay until after normal hours.
When given tasks I was expected to complete them to a high standard and use my initiative. However it was rare to get work that required a great deal of understanding, competence or research. Most of the work was necessary but short and simple.
Some exposure to tax regulations, compliance, business strategies, effects on businesses will hopefully be useful in my studies in accounting and finance next year
The Company
Friendly and collaborative. At times it was very quiet but most of the time people are working together and sharing jokes.
Very organised. Typical office layout with rows of desks, coffee room, breakout and meetings area.
This was a short 6 week placement so there was no formal training apart from the initial service line induction (Tax).
Very appealing if you are looking for a firm in the heart of London, a fantastic city to work and live in. Good work.life balance with opportunities to get involved in charity and sport. The flat meritocratic structure allows for networking with very senior people which is a big attraction for a graduate finding their place in the organisation.
The Culture
Socialising is up to your group of friends and colleagues.
This is quite high due to the location - London
Awesome!
Yes if you have the time after work you can get involved in the sports clubs
