The Role
I have been given so much scope to change my job to make sure I get what I wanted out of this year. I have learnt so much from both my team and other interns, and living with a huge intern community means you are never alone! The 101 extracurricular teams are an amazing way to gain exposure to different people within the business and also external companies. I could not be happier!
From day 1 I was given real responsibility. I am the only intern in my department and am treated like a full time employee. People now rely on me to teach them about things I have been working on, and the numbers that I control do to the senior leadership team at Microsoft.
My Manager is hugely supportive. At Microsoft we have a timetable called 70,30,10. This means 70% of your time should be on your job role, 30 on 101 teams (extra curricular) and 10% should be on personal development. I have weekly 1:1's with my manager and the two mentors I have been assigned here, so if I have anything I need help with there is always a meeting coming up. We also have numerous teams who are here just to make sure we are happy at work and achieving what we wanted to achieve here.
I am always busy, with important things I need to be doing but I always have time to play pool or table football with the other interns at lunch! Microsoft is a very relaxed company who expects you to want to do your work. Therefore if you have too much work don't be afraid to tell someone, or if you would like different work its easy to ask someone. Also if you have a too little you are expected to ask for more!
