The Role
I thoroughly enjoyed my time in J.P Morgan. From day 1 I was given real responsibility and contributed to numerous value adding activities. I was allowed to choose a preference for which department I wanted to go into, and the pre-screening questionnaire ensured I was put in a team that I really would enjoy - they nailed it. I learnt an invaluable amount of transferable skills on this internship.
My team made a conscious effort to include me into their team, despite being 'the intern'. I was invited to attend all team meetings and out of work networking events with my department. By the end of the internship I felt like one of the team, with a strong and cohesive relationship with my colleagues.
I had fortnightly arranged meetings specifically for feedback. I would often ask when completing a process, on how to do it better - in order to learn. My colleagues would often show me new processes and products when they had time.
I was responsible for numerous day to day tasks that needed completing throughout the day, as well as processing trades that came in. On top of this, I was part of a few key projects that really enhanced my product knowledge. This kept me very busy and I would often stay late in order to learn more.
I was given real hands on responsibility and completed several fairly risky tasks on a daily basis. I physically added value after a few weeks of mainly learning. I wasn't palmed off with dull/non-necessary tasks.
Working within a corporate environment has enabled me to develop certain transferable skills that I can use in my degree (such as getting up earlier!) but also adopting a hard working ethos. I attended over 20 online/on the job related courses (which helped with my product knowledge) and my colleagues would often pull me over to explain something for 30 minutes at a time.
The Company
The atmosphere was very vibrant and exciting - especially when it was busy.. Everyone in my team and department was friendly and approachable, and I felt like I could ask them anything without sounding silly. There was a real emphasis on helping out each other and this was something I contributed to.
From the moment I received my offer, I was constantly provided with information regarding the logistics of the internship. Throughout the intership, HR set up numerous networking events with many senior managers within the company and arranged speaker events from the company board and CEO, [This section of the comment has been removed by a member of the RateMyPlacement Team because it did not meet our site terms and conditions]. There was structured feedback sessions, and every other detail was communicated effectively.
I completed company training programmes (mostly online) and received numerous 121 sessions with a colleague who educated me in certain processes and how to complete it effectively. I wasn't allowed to complete qualifications (understandably) but I gained the feeling that the company and my colleagues, really wanted to invest in me and allow me to develop.

I was offered a place on their graduate scheme. Generally the majority of interns received an offer (about 95%) - as the recruitment process is quite tough to get in. But if you come in, want to learn, and work hard, you stand a very good chance of getting an offer. After the graduate scheme there is a strong emphasis on rotating and developing new skills, this is very appealing.
The Culture
We were advised to live in a certain part of the local student halls - so it was just like the 1st year of uni again. This made socialising pretty easy and I have made some lifelong friends there. Everyone was in the same boat, and I stayed nearly every weekend to go out and do things at the weekend. We went out every weekend and it made you appreciate the lack of time off you have, more.
My rent was about £110pw which is relatively expensive for the area we were in, but the socialising made up for this. As for the overall cost, it was about average for living in the south and there were no surprises for the price, unless you strayed into more expensive bars at £5 a pint. Similar scene with clubs, if you strayed into the more expensive clubs, it got more expensive.
Bournemouth is the stag and hen do mecca in the UK, so expect a lot of questionable characters/groups at anytime of the day. There were three decent clubs that we could head to after work on a friday, and generally all the interns would head to the same place. Overall, the nightlife was pretty good, with a variety of bars as well and I would definitely recommend that you stayed in Bournemouth over the weekend instead of head home, as I felt I got so much more out of this by doing this.
There is a strong social/sports scene attached to J.P Morgan in the form of clubs, that we were encouraged to join in with. Outside of that, there was a strong range of opportunities that isn't offered in London. There was the New Forest nearby (plenty of camping/cycling opportunities), a beach (yes many BBQs), as well as a nearby harbour and the Jurassic Coast to explore - plenty to do.
