The Role
I found it very enjoyable and found the placement interesting. The site visits I participated in were a highlight
The Civils team were very welcoming and helped me fit in well with the team. They also gave their guidance and helped me out with my assigned work.
They were very accommodating and tried their best to get me involved with a variety of task and work.
Some days I wasn't busy enough due to variety of reasons. But on the whole I had enough work to keep me occupied.
I was given a couple of projects to work on. These were my projects to progress and get done. These required me to liaise with the team and ensure I did the work before my placement ended.
I don't feel that I actually used any of the technical knowledge I have acquired at Uni so far. How I feel this placement has taught me thing that Uni couldn't such as the industrial experience, the use of standards, standard drawings and working in an engineering team. I think doing this placement ha given me an invaluable experience that will help me progress into my future career.
The Company
The atmosphere was very friendly. Everyone was really welcoming and made me feel welcome. I feel I go on well with my colleagues and made a few new friends along the way.
I really enjoyed the placement and I was given plenty of work to do. However I feel I would have benefited from some goals/ targets to achieve during the placement. I did briefly talk about this with my line manager before I left. I also feel sometimes when working on my projects I wasn't given enough guidance so sometimes my work came to a bit of a stop.
During my placement I did many online modules aimed at improving my knowledge.
Flexi Time
Company Parties/Events
I feel like Atkins would be a company I would consider working for in the future. The company has high standards and is a renowned international company which is very appealing.
The Culture
My work colleagues were excellent made me feel welcome and invited me on a few social nights out.
The problem with working in York was the commuting It took 3 hours out of my day. However York as a place to work is great as it a lovely city.
Didn't partake in the nightlife unfortunately. However did visit a few of the local bars/pus that were very good.
The company laid a night out for the civils team and took the office to the York races which was very good fun. There wasn't much sport on offer though which was a disappointment
