The Role
I enjoyed working in Atkins during summer. I returned to the same project I had been working during my year placement, so I had a good background about the project already. I enjoyed working with other people in the team. They have been very helpful and I have learned a lot from them.
I felt that I was listened to and that my opinion was valued. I felt as part of the team and I liked solving engineering problems and discussing these with other engineers. I have developed my communication skills.
People have been very helpful. I was able to ask questions whenever I needed help. I have been learning from other engineers a lot.
Most of the summer I have been very busy. There were days when I was very busy and days when I didn`t have that much to do. But overall I felt quite busy which I liked.
I have been communicating with architects, building services engineers as well as external suppliers. I think that the fact that I was communicating with different disciplines and solving problems gave me more responsibility.
I have extensively improved my communication skills and problem solving skills. I have also developed my knowledge of how to work with different software's and my engineering knowledge of how to solve problems.
The Company
Atmosphere in the office was always friendly and very welcoming. When anyone had a birthday there were always cakes in the office. It was quite busy office. People were working together, discussing issues and solving problems. We also had couple of team noghts out which were nice.
Apart from a bit of issues of settling in at the beginning of the placement, everything else went smoothly. Only comment I could make is that I was told that I would be working in Epsom office over summer, but after first day in the office I was told to go and work from London office. I would have helped to know this earlier as then I could find a place to stay nearer London.
I had a chance to participate in UCL engineering drawing gym, I learned how to do engineering sketching. I enjoyed this course and I think this will be very helpful to my future career as well as last year of the university.
Company Parties/Events
I have been offered a place after I graduate. I have accepted the offer and I am looking forward coming back and working in Atkins in a year.
The Culture
I didn`t meet many other placement students as they might be in different office. I have been socialising with other apprentices and graduates.
Cost of living was quite high as rent in London is very high as well as food expenses. My travel expenses were paid back which helped me a lot.
I have been enjoying night-life in London as much as possible. I have been meeting with friends, going to salsa classes or drawing classes. I really enjoyed all the activities that were available to me during my placement.
Yes. Company has got many sport societies so I could get involved in those. There were many other opportunities of things to do around the area.
