The Role
I enjoyed my time greatly at BAE Systems. The work although challenging at times was wide ranging and kept me busy throughout my time at the company. I got to work in all areas of software engineering from requirements through to testing and thoroughly enjoyed getting to work on different stages of the software cycles.
All of BAE Systems staff were friendly and made me feel welcome from the first day. They helped me settle in with the company and showed me the ropes. The staff were more than happy for me to get involved in social activities as well, such as football on certain days of the week.
I was grateful to have an extremely helpful manager throughout my time at BAE Systems. He showed me the work that I needed to complete during my time at the company and gave guidance and best practice for some potential ways to complete the given tasks. He was also more than happy to help if help was needed throughout
I was kept busy throughout my time at BAE systems as I was working on multiple projects which all had real world deadlines. I worked alongside fellow team members to ensure deadlines were met and we all had work to complete throughout the time at the company. Anytime work was complete new work was found quickly.
I was given a large amount of responsibility during my placement. I was given the task of completing various projects which would be used by real customers. I was allowed to work independently without been watched most of the time which allowed me to carry out tasks independently and quickly.
BAE Systems have really helped me develop skills for the remaining modules in my degree. They have taught me more about the various stages of the software development cycle and how they are implemented in real world environments. As well as this I learnt a large amount about code styles and standardisation and how they are used throughout BAE
The Company
The general atmosphere in the office was upbeat. My colleagues seemed happy to be in the position they were in and job satisfaction seemed high. Colleagues were than willing to have a joke and a laugh when not working. There was no segregation between interns and colleagues and everyone was really friendly.
Overall the internship was well organised and structured as I had a specific project to work on and was allowed to complete the project as required. However, the start of the internship was not so smooth with a cancelled induction which seemed to confuse co-workers to begin with and lead to a slower start than expected
BAE Systems invested time in personal training and development. At the start of the internship they give me time to learn company practices and how to use the systems the company had. As well as this throughout the internship I kept receiving advice which led to my development throughout my internship.
Future employment prospects are high in BAE systems. I have really enjoyed my time with the company and it seems the type of company I would love to work for. I have been told about the various graduate opportunities in the company and this excites and I look forward to applying for them.
The Culture
The site I was located at with BAE Systems meant that this was not the case. I only had 1 other intern with me a 1 other graduate. This meant social activities were very limited. This was however made up by colleagues been more than happy for us to get involved with them
The cost seemed reasonable and the area was nice to live in
I was given many opportunities to take place in activities out of work ranging from Football to Badminton. I was also given the opportunity to go on courses during my time at BAE systems which would enhanced my experience with the company. However nightlife was an issue due to the lack of other interns in my unit.
